Hantavirus, the infection that tragically killed Gene Hackman’s wife Betsy Arakawa, has been in the news lately. But what is hantavirus, and how does it spread? While it’s unknown how Arakawa contracted hantavirus, there are 24 known types of the disease that can make people sick. Hantavirus might seem like a common cold at first, because its initial symptoms mimic cold or flu-like symptoms., but the infection can cause serious complications and death. In North America, people usually contract hantavirus by inhaling rodent feces, urine, or saliva…particularly while cleaning. To prevent contracting the disease, experts recommend keeping your environment free from rodents and disinfecting areas that could be contaminated with rodent fluids or feces. Wearing gloves and a mask while disinfecting could also offer protection. (Study Finds)
