Researchers from Tel Aviv analyzed 1,577 Reddit comments to discover why people exercise. They found that 24% of those comments discussed looking better, 19% mentioned physical health, and 17% talked about mental health benefits. This study differs from surveys where people self-report, and instead takes a look about what people are saying online. “In questionnaires, people claim they want to be healthy, but in reality, they want six-pack abs,” Professor Yftach Gepner said. “These findings are important because they teach us how to address the public, how to persuade people to get off the couch, promote health, and prevent disease.” Many users commented that motivation was not enough, but developing and maintaining habits were the keys to success.
