A study from Johannes Gutenberg University Mainz and the University of Bern pinpointed the exact moment a relationship is doomed. Scientists uncovered a two-phase “terminal decline” involving a gradual decrease in happiness followed by a steep drop seven to 28 months before separation. On average, the partner who will instigate the breakup enters this phase a year before the partner who receives the news. This could be why one partner usually feels more “prepared” for the breakup than the other. Researchers recommend taking action before this “terminal phase” begins. “If unsatisfied couple members are still in the preterminal phase and have not yet reached the transition point, efforts to improve the relationship may be more effective,” study authors wrote.
