A recent study from Brown University found that preventable deaths are on the rise in each U.S. state. Avoidable deaths increased between 2009 and 2019, even though the United States tends to spend more on healthcare than other industrialized nations. West Virginia in particular saw the largest increase of avoidable deaths over the last decade, while New York performed the best among all the states. State-level policy differences could account for the greater variations between states. “There’s been a lot of discussion about preventable deaths in the U.S. such as drug-related deaths or suicides,” lead study author Irene Papanicolas said. “However, we found that deaths from nearly all major categories are increasing.” (Study Finds)
