Animation fans have been using OpenAI’s image generator to imitate the work of Japanese animation company Studio Ghibli, the studio responsible for movies like “Spirited Away” and “My Neighbor Totoro.” The trend has transformed classic memes, TV shows, and real-life scenes between Donald Trump and Volodymyr Zelensky. However, other fans note that studio co-founder Hayao Miyazaki has described AI-generated art as an “insult to life itself.” “If you really want to make creepy stuff, you can go ahead and do it, but I would never wish to incorporate this technology into my work at all,” Miyazaki has said on video. OpenAI’s CEO Sam Altman joked about the backlash and how much interest it has generated in AI. “Mostly no one cares for first 7.5 years, then for 2.5 years everyone hates you for everything,” he wrote on X.
