A drug used to treat genetic conditions might actually help control mosquitoes. Researchers from the University of Notre Dame found that Nitisinone makes human blood deadly to these pests. When mosquitoes consume blood with Nitisinone, they become paralyzed and die. Mosquitoes spread a host of diseases such as malaria, which killed over 619,000 people in 2021. Ivermectin is a similar drug being tested for the same use, but researchers found that Nitisinone was more effective. Additionally, Nitisinone is approved for use in newborns and children, unlike Ivermectin. However, more research is needed to determine the proper dose and measure its real-world impact against malaria. (Study Finds)
