Research from the Yale School of Public Health found that life expectancy in the United States varies based on where you live, and some states have seen greater gains than others. Since 1900, southern states like Oklahoma, Mississippi, and West Virginia have gained less than three years of life expectancy. However, Northeastern and Western states have gained decades of life. Female Washington D.C. residents, for example, could expect to live to 63.9 in 1900, and now have a life expectancy of 93. These regional variations could reflect state health policies. “Where you are born shouldn’t determine how long you live. But in America, it still does,” lead author Theodore Holford said.
