Researchers from the University of Warwick set out to see why dating app usage appears to have cooled over the last year. Part of this could be due to the frustration users face trying to establish authentic connections. For example, OkCupid used to ask a wide range of questions and allowed users to specify which answers they looked for in other matches. In contrast, modern apps tend to promote simple engagement metrics like swipes and time spent. “The industry’s future may ultimately depend on whether companies can shift focus from impersonal engagement metrics to fostering authentic connections,” researchers led by Anh Luong wrote.
