Researchers from Texas A&M University and Utah Valley University found that Americans may judge who gets priority when it comes to receiving an organ transplant, especially if they made “irresponsible” health choices. According to a survey of 4,177 Americans, respondents judged patients based on perceived responsibility for their conditions. For example, someone with a genetic disease was generally considered more “worthy” of a transplant than someone who needed a new liver due to alcohol use disorder. Support also dropped for unvaccinated people who needed a lung transplant after contracting Covid-19. “The larger question here is whether and how public attitudes should be included in transplant allocations,” study author Simon F. Haeder said. (Study Finds)
