For many of us, Memorial Day kicks off the beginning of summer…but how many Americans know the true meaning of the holiday? A Talker Research survey found that only 48% of Americans know that Memorial Day honors military service members who passed away while serving their country. This percentage dips for younger Americans: Only 27% of Gen Zers know the meaning of Memorial Day. About 35% of the 2,000 adults polled seem to confuse Memorial Day with Veterans Day. Veterans Day honors all military veterans, living or dead. Of employed people surveyed, 65% get the day off, and 35% still have to clock in. (Study Finds)
