While hiking a remote Alaskan trail near Godwin Glacier, 61-year-old Kell Morris became trapped after a sudden rockslide pinned him under a 700-pound boulder. Tumbling approximately 20 feet into a nearby creek, Morris was trapped face-down in the freezing water. As he drifted in and out of consciousness as his wife, Jo Roop, a former Alaska State Trooper, spent around 30 minutes attempting to free him. Roop then hiked to an area with cell signal and called 911. A nearby sled dog tourism company flew a helicopter to the inaccessible scene, enabling a rapid rescue. Seven responders lifted the boulder using airbags and brute force, finally freeing Morris as the creek was rising and Roop was holding his head above water to prevent drowning. Despite two nights hospitalized, Morris emerged with only minor injuries, saying he feels “the luckiest man alive” thanks to his “great wife.” (newser)
