Man Charged For Drawing Chalk Crosswalk At Intersection He Says Is Dangerous

A pedestrian safety advocate in Charlottesville, Virginia has been charged with vandalism after creating a makeshift crosswalk at a dangerous intersection. Kevin Cox, known for his outspoken advocacy, took matters into his own hands after pleading with the city for a crosswalk to no avail. Cox used a line marker and spray chalk to create the crosswalk, which he said was to address the issue of “the speed of the cars” and drivers “ignor[ing] pedestrians.” The city deemed the crosswalk markings as vandalism, as they could not determine if permanent paint was used. City staff painted over the crosswalk with black paint. Cox turned himself in to police and is facing misdemeanor charges for the intentional destruction of property worth less than $1,000, which could result in up to 12 months in jail and a $2,500 fine. Despite the charges, Cox stated, “They have provoked me. It’s not going to stop me.” (KBTX)
