Global Seahorse Smuggling Network Worth $21M Uncovered

Researchers have uncovered a massive seahorse smuggling operation worth over $21 million, spanning 62 countries from 2010 to 2021. Despite international bans on seahorse trade, nearly 5 million seahorses were trafficked through a sophisticated network. The illegal shipments primarily end up in traditional Chinese medicine, though Belgium and Peru also played significant roles. Most seizures occurred at airports, but sea cargo facilitated the largest hauls. The study highlights the interconnected nature of wildlife trafficking networks, with seahorses often smuggled alongside other endangered species.
