The World’s Third Biggest Religion Is Now ‘None’

A new report from the Pew Research Center examines global religious trends from 2010 to 2020. The key findings indicate that Islam was the fastest-growing faith, with the Muslim population increasing by 347 million – more than all other religions combined. This growth was primarily driven by higher birth rates in regions like the Middle East, North Africa, and Asia-Pacific, rather than conversions. Christianity remains the largest religion globally, growing by 122 million adherents, but its overall share declined. The religiously unaffiliated (“nones”) also grew, now comprising the third-largest group at 24.2% of the global population. Buddhism was the only religion to see a decline, dropping by 19 million.
