New research analyzing 1.7 billion words from 20 English-speaking countries found that the United States has the highest rate of online profanity at 0.036%, followed by Great Britain at 0.025% and Australia at 0.022%. The study, published in the journal Lingua, used computer programs to detect vulgar language variations across websites and blog posts. English-speaking countries where English is the first language showed more creativity in their vulgar vocabulary compared to those where English is a second language. The research highlighted cultural differences in online cursing habits, with Americans favoring variations of “ass” while British users preferred “cunt.” (Studyfinds)
