A recent survey of 2,000 Americans found that a quarter (24%) desire temporary abstinence from sexual activity. Respondents cited various reasons, including “to learn other forms of intimacy,” “give the body and mind a chance to catch up,” and a desire for “more emotional closeness.” Notably, 30% believe romance is fading, with real love and gestures no longer valued. This sentiment has led half (52%) to previously take a sex break, averaging six months. While 53% missed and appreciated intimacy more after, 11% felt the opposite. Many singletons (69%) are content being unattached, with 55% preferring to “fall in love with life.” Yet 54% acknowledge sex’s importance for romantic bonding. Intimacy, they say, is more about understanding (57%) than just physicality (37%). Alternative expressions, like hand-holding and conversation, fulfill three-quarters (76%) of respondents’ intimacy needs. (Talker Research)
