Authorities in London are investigating the theft of an 18th-century violin valued at $200,000 from a pub. The instrument, owned by a German businessman, was on loan to a member of the Philharmonia Orchestra, David Lopez Ibanez, who brought it with him to a pub following a rehearsal. According to Ibanez, he placed the violin next to him, but a thief was able to take it by concealing it under a long coat and walking out undetected. The owner, Sebastian Kutscha, stated he expects the loss to be covered by insurance, though he was not pleased the violin had been brought to a pub. Kutscha, however, expressed sympathy for Ibanez, saying “he’s really suffering” and there was no need to further criticize him. Police have released images of the suspect and are asking the public to assist in identifying the individual responsible for the unusual theft. (newser)
