A promising new treatment for snoring and sleep apnea has emerged – the ancient practice of blowing through a conch shell. A small study in India found that 30 people with obstructive sleep apnea who practiced “shankh blowing” for 15 minutes a day, 5 days a week, experienced significant improvements. After 6 months, they were 34% less sleepy during the day and had better quality of sleep compared to a control group. Experts explain that the deep inhalation and forceful exhalation through the shell strengthens the upper airway muscles, preventing the collapse that causes apnea and snoring. The unique spiral structure of the shell may also contribute acoustically. Unlike the current standard treatment of CPAP machines, this ancient technique is simple, low-cost, and medication-free. Researchers are now planning a larger trial to further assess its benefits, including for those with the most severe sleep apnea. (Daily Mail)
