A large study of nearly 80,000 Seventh-day Adventists found vegetarians had a 12% lower overall cancer risk compared to meat eaters. Vegans had the greatest reduction at 24%, with lower rates of breast, prostate, and gastrointestinal cancers. Lacto-ovo vegetarians and pescatarians also showed cancer-protective benefits. Researchers attribute the findings to vegetarians generally being leaner, less likely to smoke or drink, and more physically active. While not a cure-all, the study suggests vegetarian diets could be a valuable cancer prevention strategy with minimal risk. (The Times)
