A new study reveals that 44% of people ages 15 and older worldwide remain unaware they have diabetes. The research analyzed data from 204 countries between 2000 and 2023. Young adults showed the highest rates of undiagnosed cases, facing greater risks for long-term complications. In the United States, the CDC estimates 8 million adults have undiagnosed diabetes, representing about 20% of cases. Lead researcher Lauryn Stafford warns undiagnosed diabetes can cause heart disease, kidney damage, neuropathy, and vision problems. “If someone is not aware of their diabetes, they will not receive the treatment or lifestyle guidance from their physician that they need to manage their diabetes,” Stafford said. Most undiagnosed cases involve type 2 diabetes, which often remains symptom-free in early stages. (Story URL)
