New research suggests diet significantly affects hair loss and growth. The study analyzed 17 research papers involving 613,320 people aged 7 to 77. Sugar-sweetened beverages and alcoholic drinks increase hair loss risk, according to the findings. “When we consume high amounts of sugar, we get an insulin spike that promotes inflammation and can distort the natural hair growth cycles,” explains Laura Acosta, a registered dietitian at the University of Florida. Alcohol contributes to nutrient deficiency and systemic inflammation that harm hair growth. Protein deficiency also causes hair loss – people need half a gram per pound of body weight daily. Beneficial foods include soy products like edamame and cruciferous vegetables such as broccoli. One study found 400 mg of pumpkin seed oil for 24 weeks improved male pattern baldness. Vitamin D, iron, and biotin supplements may help those with deficiencies. (Story URL)
