96% Of LGBTQ Adults Have Disclosed Identity To Someone, Pew Survey Shows

Nearly all LGBTQ adults in America have shared their identity with at least one person, according to a Pew Research Center survey. The study found 96% have told someone they are or might be LGBTQ, while only 3% remain completely closeted. Overall, 8% of U.S. adults identify as lesbian, gay, bisexual or transgender based on a separate 2024 survey. Most LGBTQ Americans recognized their identity early, with 82% saying they first felt they might be LGBTQ before age 18, including 58% before age 14. However, only 14% disclosed this information before age 14. Many aren’t fully out: 32% haven’t told extended family, 25% of employed respondents haven’t told coworkers, and 23% haven’t told parents. Among those who have come out, acceptance rates vary, with 69% of siblings and 61% of friends being fully accepting, compared to 46% of parents. (Story URL)
