A surfboard that disappeared off Tasmania in May 2024 has been recovered in New Zealand after drifting 1,500 miles across the ocean. French expatriate Alvaro Bon discovered the barnacle-covered, 7-foot-6 cream-colored board while seeking shelter at Raglan Harbour on New Zealand’s North Island two weeks ago. The board had blown off owner Liam’s boat while still in its bag during rough conditions. After Bon posted photos on social media asking “Wonder if the board could have drifted from east Australia??” hundreds joined the search for its owner. Liam was identified through friends, and he provided photos proving ownership. He described the board as irreplaceable since its designer Josh Fairleigh stopped making surfboards. Arrangements are now underway for the board’s return via Auckland. Fairleigh commented, “This board may have accumulated more ocean time and wisdom than all of us.” (Story URL)
