Released today (July 9th) is the Rolling Stones' new multimedia set, The Rolling Stones — A Bigger Bang: Live On Copacabana Beach. The double-DVD, two-CD collection was captured in Brazil on February 8th, 2006 at Rio de Janeiro's Copacabana Beach in front of a reported 1.5 million people — both on land and at sea.
The set, which is an expanded version of the 2007 release, is packaged in a 12-by-12, 40-page book, along with an exclusive bonus DVD including a November 2005 concert in Salt Lake City — also from the band's tour behind A Bigger Bang.
The package has also been issued as a triple-LP — pressed on blue, yellow, and green vinyl, along with a clear vinyl version.
Keith Richards said in the press release for Live On Copacabana Beach: “Not that we're unused to playing some of the biggest shows in the world, but I must say Rio did take the cake.”
Mick Jagger added: “It was amazing. It was a really good audience. They know how to enjoy themselves on those occasions.”
Mick Jagger told us that in terms of the band's nightly setlist — just because a song might've cooked during rehearsals, it hardly means that it'll be a hit when introduced onstage: “The thing about when you do running orders, is that it's completely hypothetical. You don't know if this song is going to work — and you soon do. And you go out and you do it. And if it doesn't work. . . you don't know about songs.”
Keith Richards was asked if after all these years he gets nervous just before jumping on stage — especially playing venues like the massive football stadiums the Stones usually play: “No — but there is. . . it depends what you mean by nerves. I mean, some people (get) nerves, or butterflies — no, that don't come into it. But there is at the same time a sense of excitement. You really, gotta, like, fly. Y'know, that's what you try and do, y'know; and I got some fliers in this band.”
Over 45 years since first hitting the road with the Rolling Stones, Ron Wood says that he and Keith Richards still possess a sixth sense about how to intertwine their guitar work onstage: “That was something that Keith and I have always luckily had from the start. We never planned, as such, what we are gonna do individually. We have a knack of if one goes this way, the other one will slide in this way. On a certain number, we don't even look at each other. If I wanna take the solo, I'll take it, right? And if he wants to take it, he'll take it.”
