Is it really harder to make new friends now? A new study by the American Friendship Project suggests that the loneliness epidemic could be a myth. Researchers found that the average American has four or five close friends, and less than 3% have no friends at all. These figures have remained stable over the past 40 years. Long-distance friendships are now very common, suggesting that modern technology helps bridge physical divides. However, the survey found that people may yearn for deeper connections. “Americans long for greater closeness with friends; although over 75% were satisfied with the number of friends they had, 42% felt they were not as close to their friends as they would like,” researchers wrote.
