A University of Michigan study found that a surprising number of kids aged six to 12 don’t have any friends. Their poll of 1,031 parents discovered that 20% of children might have no friends at all. Parents say that social awkwardness, medical conditions, and limited places to socialize make it hard for children to form these bonds. Researchers say parents can help by supporting small-group activities and letting their children navigate situations independently. “Parents should expect and allow children to make mistakes, intervening only in matters of safety,” the director of the poll said. “Later, in a private moment with the child, parents should be ready to listen and offer advice.” (Study Finds)
