Binging on Halloween candy can cause an upset stomach: But some sweets are better for your gut microbiome than others. Gastroenterologist Christopher Damman says that Halloween candy can disrupt the trillions of microorganisms in your belly, and sugar can impair your gut’s ability to digest food. Sugar-coated nuts and candy apples are slightly better for your stomach, as they will contain fiber. Dark chocolate with at least 80% cacao may encourage helpful bacterias to grow. The worst offenders? Chewy candies. “These sugar-laden confections are mostly made of high fructose corn syrup, saturated fat, and additives,” Damman writes. “They can increase the unsavory bacterial species in your gut and lead to inflammation, making them one of the least healthy Halloween choices.” (Study Finds)
