60% of Americans report that their mental health has been impacted by November’s elections. Of the 2,000 adults polled, 46% feel anxious, and 31% feel fear. 27% say they are optimistic, and 22% feel excitement. Men were more likely than women to experience positive emotions associated with the election. “I believe some people’s anxiety comes from past post-election results,” Dr. Rufus Tony Spann explains. “Based on the results of previous elections, some communities felt they needed to prepare for the backlash due to the results of an election.” Registering to vote, learning more about candidates, and stepping away from political messaging are some ways to calm anxiety.
