An emperor penguin nicknamed Gus is the first of his kind to swim to Australia, and he sadly discovered that sand is not snow. “He tried to do like, a slide on his belly, thinking it was snow I guess, and just face-planted in the sand,” surfer Aaron Fowler, who discovered the penguin on Ocean Beach, said. Experts believe Gus got lost and ended up 2,200 miles away from Antarctica. The penguin was captured and brought to an enclosure where he can be kept cool and rehabilitated. When Gus was discovered, he was only half the weight of a typical emperor penguin. “Never in my wildest thoughts would I have thought I’d ever have an emperor penguin to care for,” wildlife rehabilitator Carol Biddulph said. It’s unclear if Gus will be transported back to Antarctica when he’s recovered. (newser)
