A Duke University study of 4,213 individuals across 34 populations worldwide found that expanding waistlines are not primarily due to decreased physical activity but rather to dietary intake. The research showed that people in developed countries burn more calories daily, even after adjusting for body size. Surprisingly, physical activity levels did not decline with economic development. The study highlighted a correlation between the consumption of ultra-processed foods and increased body fat percentage.
