Twenty percent of people 50 and older who use cannabis reported driving while high at least once in the past year, according to new research. The University of Michigan study analyzed data from 3,379 adults over 50, including 729 cannabis users. Daily or near-daily users were three times more likely to drive impaired compared to occasional users. Men showed 72% higher likelihood than women to drive after cannabis use. Among older adults surveyed, 27% of those aged 50-64 used cannabis in the past year, along with 17% of those 65 and older. Lead researcher Erin Bonar noted that “so much of the effort to reduce ‘driving while high’ through awareness campaigns has focused on young people, but our findings show this is a cross-generational issue.” Users seeking mental health treatment were twice as likely to drive impaired.
